A values driven approach to AI
In this collaborative project, Arinco and MinterEllison partnered to develop the MinterEllison Advice Generator, a groundbreaking AI-driven chatbot solution aimed at transforming the legal advice drafting process.
Taking a values-driven approach to AI exploration, MinterEllison, sought to leverage AI technologies to drive their mission of creating sustainable value for their clients, people, and communities.
Guiding the development of the MinterEllison Advice Generator were their Responsible AI principles of accountability, security and data privacy, inclusivity, reliability and explainability.
Adopting AI with security and compliance in mind
The MinterEllison Advice Generator utilises Azure Open AI and Azure AI Search, employing a retrieval augmented generation pattern for crafting precise legal advice letters based on cited legal references. Hosted on Azure, the system benefits from the platform’s infrastructure and robust security measures, operating within a private network to ensure confidentiality. Access control is managed through Azure Entra ID, adhering to stringent security protocols and permitting controlled access only to authorised individuals or teams. The integration of Open AI’s GPT models with Azure’s technology results in a secure, efficient, and reliable system for generating, protecting, and managing sensitive legal information, offering a transformative solution for legal professionals.
The Advice Generator chatbot solution was designed to mimic the behaviour of a junior lawyer who had been given the research content and received instructions from a senior lawyer. Importantly, the tool returns the draft with citations so users can cross-reference what has been drafted back to the research content. The user can also use the ‘Thought Process’ feature to understand how the model used the instructions and content to complete the draft.
By doing all of this, the user has full transparency on the tool’s behaviour and they can be completely accountable for the drafted content without any unknowns.
Whether drafted by a junior lawyer or this solution, the deliverable would always undergo review by a senior lawyer so this approach allowed employees to maintain full accountability whilst also generating efficiencies for the firm and for their clients.
Future innovation at MinterEllison
Traditionally what would take a few hours, involving multiple lawyers, now takes under 30seconds with the Advice Generator solution.
Key to the success of the advice Generator, was partnering with not only with the Automation and Client Solutions IT team but also a MinterEllison partner and their legal team to inform the design of the tool.
With the tool now in production, the response from the business has been positive, with hundreds of unique users now leveraging the tool to increase productivity.
