Overview
Arinco partnered with an Australian university to modernise its legacy technology environment, building a secure, enterprise-grade Azure platform designed for resilience and future growth. The solution introduced multi-region redundancy, advanced monitoring and modern DevOps practices, reducing downtime and enabling the university to move forward with confidence in its cloud journey.
A journey to modern infrastructure
After successfully completing the first stage of its cloud migration, moving more than 300 servers and over 40 applications to Azure and modernising SQL Server workloads, the university identified several critical gaps in its infrastructure.
Its existing network design wasn’t equipped to handle the next stage of transformation. Connectivity between on-premises systems and the cloud lacked the reliability and security needed for enterprise-grade performance. To move forward, the university needed a more scalable and resilient foundation aligned with Microsoft’s best practices and ready to support future growth.
Arinco was brought in to design and implement a modern Azure platform with secure network architecture, advanced monitoring, disaster recovery and DevOps automation built in from the start.
Our approach
Arinco delivered a comprehensive solution addressing the university’s key requirements across four critical areas.
Building an enterprise-grade Azure platform
Arinco deployed a cloud foundation aligned with Microsoft’s Enterprise-Scale Landing Zones and Cloud Adoption Framework, introducing multi-region redundancy and implementing NextGen Firewall capabilities for stronger security.
Advanced monitoring and insights
The team developed end-to-end monitoring and logging across infrastructure and applications using Azure Monitor and Log Analytics. Custom dashboards and alerts were built to give the university’s IT teams full visibility into system performance.
Disaster recovery and business continuity
Comprehensive disaster recovery plans were created for key Azure resources, including virtual machines, storage accounts and databases, ensuring the university could maintain operations even in the event of regional outages.
Modern DevOps and automation
Arinco successfully migrated more than 300 GitLab projects to Azure DevOps. Reusable Infrastructure-as-Code templates were developed to automate deployments, improve consistency and strengthen security throughout the CI/CD process.
Set for the future
The university now runs on a robust, scalable Azure platform that supports innovation across research, teaching, and operations. Key outcomes include:
- Successful migration of all key environments to Azure
- Stronger security posture through modern firewall and governance
- Consolidated development pipelines in Azure DevOps
- Enhanced disaster recovery capabilities across critical workloads
- Improved visibility and operational control through advanced monitoring
- Streamlined DevOps processes with automated infrastructure deployment
This new foundation has reduced risk, improved efficiency and positioned the university to scale its digital transformation.
What's next?
With its modern cloud platform in place, the university is now expanding its partnership with Arinco to modernise more than 200 on-premises applications, build an enterprise-grade data platform on Azure Databricks and lay the foundations for Power Platform development to support future innovation.
